About Francisco Zarco

Francisco Zarco is a village of 4,334 people (2020), 341 meters up beside Highway 3 between Tecate and Ensenada, surrounded by the vineyards of Valle de Guadalupe. Its past comes in three layers.

The oldest is the mission of Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe del Norte, founded by Fray Félix Caballero among the Kumeyaay on October 1, 1834. It was the last mission of the Californias and short-lived: in 1840 a revolt led by the Kumeyaay leader Jatñil drove the priests out. Its foundations are kept as an INAH historical park, with a site museum showing pottery, tools, religious objects, coins and nails from five periods of occupation.

The second layer is Russian. In 1905 about 500 Molokans arrived, 105 families of pacifist Christians from the Kars region who refused to serve in the tsar's army and had first tried California. Porfirio Díaz sold them some 13,000 acres of the valley, where they grew wheat, vegetables, olives and grapes, kept geese and bees, and went on speaking Russian at home and at worship. Mary Rogoff, the community midwife, delivered more than a thousand babies. A 1905 adobe house has been the Museo Comunitario Ruso since 1991, on the same property as the Samarín family restaurant, and the old Russian cemetery has headstones carved in Cyrillic.

The third came in 1938, when Lázaro Cárdenas's land reform granted fields to Mexican farmers: about 3,000 moved in, many Russians left, and the village took the name of the liberal journalist Francisco Zarco. The census tells the story: 155 residents in 1950, 3,291 in 1970. Around twenty people of fully Russian descent remain, with some 240 of mixed families, and since May 2026 the village has the Valle de Guadalupe bus terminal.
