Town 54 km east of Tecate
A windy mountain town among giant boulders, at the top of the dramatic grade that drops to the desert toward Mexicali.
La Rumorosa is a small town high in the Sierra de Juárez, on the road between Tecate and Mexicali. It takes its name from the murmur of the wind blowing through the mountains, and the wind is constant enough that wind turbines now line the ridges nearby. The landscape is the attraction: piles of huge, rounded granite boulders, chaparral, and in winter, sometimes snow.
East of town the highway drops off the edge of the sierra in the Cuesta de La Rumorosa, a series of curves that descends more than a thousand meters to the Laguna Salada desert. The toll and free roads run separately down the grade, and pullouts along the way give wide views over the desert floor. It is a beautiful drive and also a notoriously dangerous one, so take it slowly, especially in fog, wind or snow.
The town is also the base for visiting El Vallecito, the Kumiai rock art site a few kilometers away, and people come up from the valley to camp, ride mountain bikes and climb among the rocks.

Getting there
La Rumorosa is roughly an hour east of Tecate on Highway 2D, the toll road to Mexicali, or on the slower free Highway 2. Buses between Tijuana, Tecate and Mexicali run along this road. Check the weather in winter: snow, ice and strong wind sometimes close the highway.
