About Isla de las Muñecas

The Isla de las Muñecas is a chinampa, one of Xochimilco's man-made garden islands, on the Laguna de Teshuilo, deep in the canal network inside the area UNESCO listed in 1987. Its trees, fences and the walls of its huts are covered in more than a thousand dolls, many of them battered and weathered: some date from the middle of the 20th century, others are recent plastic ones left by visitors. The collection was the work of Julián Santana Barrera, a reclusive man who began hanging dolls here in the 1950s and kept at it until his death in 2001.

Santana told visitors that he started in memory of a girl he had found drowned in the canal, and that the dolls kept her spirit and other evil at bay. No record of such a drowning has ever been found, and some of his relatives doubt it, but the story stuck, made stronger by his own death: he was found in the water, aged about 80, at the spot where he said the girl had died. His family then opened the island to visitors and still manages it, under the oversight of local authorities. In 2018 Mexico City's culture ministry added it to its register of intangible heritage, and Guinness has listed it as the largest collection of so-called haunted dolls.

There is no road: you can only get here by trajinera, usually from the Cuemanco embarcadero, about an hour and a half each way, so the round trip with time on the island takes three to five hours. The route passes the quieter canals of the reserve, the Teshuilo lagoon and other chinampas. On the island there are a few huts and a small museum room with newspaper clippings about Don Julián. Be wary of copycat islands near the docks: a boatman promising to get there in 40 minutes is not taking you to the real one.
