About Museo Anahuacalli

The Anahuacalli is the building Diego Rivera designed to hold the thousands of pre-Hispanic objects he collected over his life. He started it in 1942 on land in San Pablo Tepetlapa, in the south of Coyoacán, and built it of the black volcanic rock left by the eruption of the Xitle, quarried on the site itself. Rivera modelled it on a teocalli, a temple or house of the gods, and described the style as a blend of Aztec, Maya and what he jokingly called traditional Rivera. He died in 1957 before it was done; his daughter Ruth Rivera and the architects Juan O'Gorman and Heriberto Pagelson finished it with money from his patron Dolores Olmedo, and it opened on 18 September 1964.

Inside are 23 rooms over three levels. The ground floor stands for the underworld and is kept dim, while the upper floors, representing the world of the living, are lit by daylight. Each corner of the building is dedicated to a god and an element: Chicomecóatl, Ehécatl-Quetzalcóatl, Tláloc and Huehuetéotl. The ceilings carry stone mosaics that Rivera and O'Gorman set into cast mortar, plain on the ground floor and in coloured stone higher up. Around 2,000 of the roughly 39,000 pieces in the collection are on show; the rest are kept in storage. There are also studies Rivera drew for his murals, and the museum holds contemporary art exhibitions every year.

The climb ends on a terrace with a wide view over the lava fields of the Pedregal and the south of the city. In 2021 new buildings by the architect Mauricio Rocha added a collections store, workshops, a library and a small plaza, and about 28,000 m² of the 60,000 m² grounds are kept as a wild ecological reserve of volcanic-soil plants, with guided walks at weekends. Every autumn the museum runs a Day of the Dead programme with workshops, and it has a café and shop. It is about ten minutes by car from the Frida Kahlo museum in central Coyoacán.
