About Casa Estudio Diego Rivera y Frida Kahlo

On a corner of Avenida Altavista in San Ángel stand two boxy concrete houses, one painted red and white and the other blue, linked only by a narrow bridge at roof level and screened from the street by a living fence of organ cactus. Diego Rivera commissioned them in 1931 from the young architect Juan O'Gorman, who produced one of the first functionalist buildings in Latin America: bare concrete, exposed pipes and wiring, water tanks left in view, sawtooth roofs to let in north light, and stairs that spiral up the outside walls. The work was finished in 1932, and Rivera and Frida Kahlo moved in in 1934, back from three years in the United States.

The larger house was Rivera's studio, and he lived here until his death on 24 November 1957, painting most of his easel work in it, some three thousand pieces by the museum's count. Kahlo had the blue house, with its kitchen, dining room, small bedroom and a top-floor studio, and she painted some of the works that made her name here, among them Lo que el agua me dio. In 1941, after her father died, she went back to the family home in Coyoacán, the Casa Azul. Next door is an earlier house O'Gorman built in 1929 to 1931, presented as a home for his own father, with a curved entrance wall and a helical staircase.

The federal government gave the property to the national fine arts institute in 1981, and the museum opened on 16 December 1986, for Rivera's centenary; the houses were restored in the 1990s and again in 2012 to 2013. The highlight is Rivera's double-height studio with its big north window, still hung with his giant papier-mâché Judas figures and folk art, along with his original furniture. It is a small museum, easily seen in an unhurried visit, and the old colonial streets of San Ángel are a short ride away.
