About Museo Frida Kahlo

The Casa Azul stands on the corner of Londres and Allende in the Del Carmen neighbourhood of Coyoacán, its walls painted the cobalt blue that gave it its name. Frida Kahlo's father, the photographer Guillermo Kahlo, built the house on a plot he bought in 1904, and Frida was born here in 1907. She spent most of her life within these walls, first with her family and later with Diego Rivera, whom she married in 1929. From January 1937 to April 1939 the couple lent it to Leon Trotsky and Natalia Sedova, and the walls were raised for their safety. Rivera added the wing that closes the courtyard in 1941, and in 1946 a studio of volcanic stone was built with Juan O'Gorman's help. Frida died in the early hours of 13 July 1954 in the bed that is still in the house.

Rivera set up the trust that runs the museum in 1957, now linked to the Banco de México, and the poet Carlos Pellicer, a friend of both, arranged the rooms. The museum opened in July 1958. In 2004 thousands of documents, photographs, books and personal objects that had been locked away in bathrooms and closets came to light, and they now feed its exhibitions. It is one of the busiest museums in the city, with some 550,000 visitors in 2019.

Inside you walk through the rooms where the couple lived and worked: Frida's studio, the kitchen, the bedroom with her plaster corset and the urn with her ashes, alongside works by Kahlo and Rivera, ex-votos, folk art and pre-Hispanic pieces. The garden is the place to linger, with a stepped pyramid built to display pre-Hispanic sculptures, a fountain and a reflecting pool. Tickets are sold only online for a set entry time, and the price includes a free visit to Rivera's Anahuacalli museum, also in Coyoacán.
