About San Lorenzo Huipulco

San Lorenzo Huipulco is an original village of Tlalpan, in the south of Mexico City, directly across from Estadio Azteca. Its Nahua name, Huitzpolco, translates as "place where the sacred thorns of self-sacrifice are destroyed". It is regarded as the first of the south's original villages; in colonial times and the 19th century it was a trading centre among large haciendas, and Coyoacán administered it until Tlalpan joined the Federal District in 1928. The Council of Original Peoples and Neighbourhoods recognised it in 2016, and the city's official gazette registered it on 17 April 2017.

The heart of it is the old chapel of San Lorenzo, from the 17th century and remodelled in the 18th, with a baroque exterior and a neoclassical altar showing San Lorenzo in the centre, San Judas Tadeo on the left and the Virgin of Guadalupe on the right. Its floor was replaced in 1965 and it was restored in 1982, when the new church went up beside it; the two share an atrium that nearly touches the esplanade park across the street. Cobbled streets and old houses recall central Tlalpan. About 300 m away is Parque de las Novias.

For food, the Mercado de Comidas de Huipulco is open daily from 6 am to 10 pm, with dishes from about 45 pesos, public toilets for 5 pesos, and the Mercado Plaza Mexicana del Sur next door. Fans gather here before matches. The Tren Ligero station sits on the site of the former Glorieta de la Luna, named after a bakery. No date is published for the patron-saint feast.

How to get to San Lorenzo Huipulco

Drive from Mexico City: 20 min, 16 km

Tren Ligero: Huipulco station (Tasqueña–Xochimilco) is on avenida Acueducto, about 180 m from the chapel, just south of the Renato Leduc and Calzada de Tlalpan crossing. It is the stop after Estadio Azteca and lies about 6 km from Tasqueña, where the train starts (the whole 13 km line takes about 37 minutes). At Tasqueña you can connect with Metro Line 2, trolleybus lines 1 and 7, RTP routes and the Terminal Central de Autobuses del Sur; moving from the Metro to the Tren Ligero costs a second fare. At Huipulco, RTP routes 31B and 145A and the 2F minibus stop.

By car, the axis is Calzada de Tlalpan, with Calzada Acoxpa at the market's corner. On match or concert days at Estadio Azteca the area fills up. No driving time from downtown is published. The Tren Ligero has had temporary closures at Huipulco for works and flooding; check service before going.
