About Parque nacional Fuentes Brotantes de Tlalpan

Fuentes Brotantes is a forest of only about eight hectares inside Tlalpan, in the Santa Úrsula Xitla area, yet it was declared a national park on 28 September 1936 under President Lázaro Cárdenas, at 129 hectares. The aim was to protect the springs that run down the slopes of the Ajusco into the lake at the centre; it is one of the few surface springs left in Mexico City.

The spot was already a place for outings in colonial times: at Easter people gathered by the Calvario chapel, between the springs and San Agustín de las Cuevas (today Tlalpan), for dances, betting and cockfights. In 1831 the water drove the machinery of La Fama Montañesa, one of the country's first textile mills, which gave its name to the neighbouring colonia. During the 20th century the park kept shrinking: an agricultural training school in 1940, a primary school, 35 hectares handed to the ISSSTE social-security institute, and irregular housing.

The visit today is short and quiet: signed paths among cedar, eucalyptus, oak, pine and ahuehuete trees, a lake with ducks, swans, turtles and fish, and now and then hummingbirds and woodpeckers. Near the entrance are the Plaza Cívica Morelos with a small stage, a children's play area, exercise bars and picnic lawns. Beside the park a food market has stalls under the trees selling garnachas, gorditas, quesadillas and tacos, and parking is free. A local legend tells of La Llorona de las Fuentes Brotantes, said to be heard weeping in the woods.
