About San Jerónimo Lídice

San Jerónimo Aculco-Lídice is an old village of La Magdalena Contreras that the city grew around. Aculco means "place where the river bends"; a settlement already stood here in Toltec times, and when a dam went up in 1934 one side of a pyramid came to light. The Franciscans began a chapel in the 16th century, recorded in 1543; today it is the open chapel, which keeps its baptismal font and atrial cross. The main church was finished in 1713, with a carved-stone baroque façade and a churrigueresque altar. The atrium holds a tomb for those who fell in the 1847 battle of Contreras. The 2017 earthquake badly damaged the church, and its bell tower has since been restored.

The Lídice name dates from 1942: after the destruction of Lidice in Czechoslovakia on 10 June of that year, the northern part of the village took the name in solidarity, officially on 30 August 1942, and the primary school carries it too. Every 10 June a ceremony is held in the plaza in the atrium, a tradition since 1984; a Czech survivor has travelled here for it. The patron-saint feast of San Jerónimo is on 30 September.

Since the 1960s the area has turned residential, with art galleries. Cobbled streets and volcanic-stone walls remain, and an archway marks the way into the village. Calle Santiago and Calle Héroes de Padierna are the busiest for shops, and Mercado Tihuatlán is about 800 m away.

How to get to San Jerónimo Lídice

Drive from Mexico City: 25 min, 19 km

The church stands on Cerrada de San Jerónimo, about 300 m from avenida San Jerónimo, which runs from Ciudad Universitaria to avenida San Bernabé. By car, the Periférico runs elevated over the San Jerónimo roundabout, and the stretch beneath it is unfriendly to both walkers and drivers; past the interchange the avenue opens up south of Unidad Independencia. Times depend on traffic and no figure is published.

By public transport, the most direct option is RTP route 119A, which leaves from the CETRAM Universidad (Metro Universidad, Line 3) and runs through Copilco, avenida Río Magdalena, San Jerónimo and Aculco to Popular Santa Teresa. It began in April 2026 as a 60-working-day trial; the fare is 4 pesos, paid only with the Tarjeta de Movilidad Integrada, and it runs Monday to Friday 5 am to 11 pm, Saturday 6 am to 10 pm and Sunday 7 am to 9:30 pm. Check that it is still running. Another way: Metro Miguel Ángel de Quevedo (Line 3) is the terminus of bus routes 41 and 66 towards La Magdalena Contreras, though their exact path is not published. No Metrobús, Cablebús or train reaches the village.
