About Museo Dolores Olmedo

The Museo Dolores Olmedo occupies La Noria, a 16th-century hacienda in Xochimilco that the businesswoman and collector Dolores Olmedo (1908 to 2002) bought in 1962 and lived in. She met Diego Rivera in 1924 at the Ministry of Education and became his friend, patron and the force behind both the Casa Azul and the Anahuacalli museums. In the 1950s Rivera advised her to buy ten of his paintings and a Maya stela, the start of a collection that grew to about 145 works by Rivera and 25 by Frida Kahlo, the largest anywhere. She opened her home as a museum on 17 September 1994.

After closing for almost six years, the museum reopened on 30 May 2026, just before the World Cup, following a renovation that covered floors, ironwork, gardens, workshops and storage, and Olmedo's living room, dining room and bedroom, some of which are shown to the public for the first time. The reopening shows were Diego Rivera de Europa a Acapulco, which runs from his early years in Europe to the sunsets he painted at Olmedo's Acapulco house in 1956 and 1957, when he was already ill with cancer, and Frida Kahlo en dos tiempos, with more than a hundred works between them; among Kahlo's pieces are La columna rota and Henry Ford Hospital (1932).

Besides Rivera and Kahlo, the collection includes work by Angelina Beloff, Rivera's first wife, and Pablo O'Higgins, plus pre-Hispanic objects, colonial pieces and Mexican folk art, and there is a new space for children's workshops. Part of the pleasure is the grounds: lawns and old stone buildings where peacocks wander and the museum's xoloitzcuintles, Mexico's ancient hairless dogs, lie in the sun. Olmedo set up a Day of the Dead altar every year from 1958 to support folk artisans, and the museum keeps the tradition with an annual ofrenda. Tickets are bought online or at the box office, and staff check ID for discounted fares.
