About Bosque Mirador

Twenty-two hectares of pine forest survive in Ahuatepec, a village on the northern edge of Cuernavaca, and in 2016 the municipality made them a protected natural area. It is called Bosque Mirador. Along with the Barrancas Urbanas de Cuernavaca (369.95 ha), it is one of only two municipally run protected areas in Morelos; the state environment ministry's table lists it at 22.05 ha. It touches the Corredor Biológico Chichinautzin, so it forms a belt of woodland between the city's neighbourhoods and the mountains.

It is small, but the state tourism atlas says birds, fungi, reptiles, amphibians and mammals live here, among them the grey fox and the bobcat. The same entry lists what threatens it: urban growth, land invasions, rubbish and thin resources for management. It points to the site's educational value rather than selling it as a destination with services.

The forest is looked after by the city's Dirección de Conservación de Bosques, Barrancas y Áreas Naturales Protegidas. In July 2024 the city started a reforestation programme of about 7,500 trees in the woods of Ahuatepec, Buenavista del Monte, Tetela del Monte and Ocotepec; the first Saturday planted more than 2,000 pines and oaks in Ahuatepec, donated by the state ministry from Tetela del Volcán. That report does not name Bosque Mirador, but it shows what kind of forest is being worked on around here.

We found no published opening hours, fee or signed entrance, so treat it as a neighbourhood woodland in an urban area and ask the city office before you go.

How to get to Bosque Mirador

Drive from Cuernavaca: 10 min, 9 km

The forest is in Ahuatepec, north of Cuernavaca, about 7 km from the city centre in a straight line (allow 20 to 30 minutes by car or taxi in traffic, approx.). From Mexico City you reach Cuernavaca on the 95D toll road, then climb to Ahuatepec through the northern part of the city; ask a taxi or combi to take you to Ahuatepec. Tepoztlán is about 10 km away as the crow flies, but a mountain ridge lies between the two and the road is much longer.

There is no signed entrance or published schedule. Before you go, call the city's Dirección de Conservación de Bosques, Barrancas y Áreas Naturales Protegidas (Motolinía 2, Centro, Cuernavaca; phone 777 329 5500) and ask where to enter. By bus, Terminal Sur (Taxqueña) has departures to Cuernavaca with Pullman de Morelos.

Visiting Bosque Mirador: what to see and do

Look at the Ahuatepec pine forest from its edges and respect any closed areas.
Watch for birds and, in the rainy season, fungi; grey fox and bobcat live here but are rarely seen.
Compare it with Cuernavaca's urban ravines, the city's other protected area.
Ask the conservation office whether any reforestation days are open to the public.
