Ojo de Agua de Los Berros

Nature reserve 11 km north of Nombre de Dios

Spring-fed pools under giant sabino trees where, tradition says, the first Mass in the region was said in 1555; several family balnearios.

Los Berros is a small village north of Nombre de Dios built around a spring, an oasis of clear water in the dry high plains of Durango. Huge old sabinos and willows shade the springs and the nearby river, their roots spreading over the banks in strange shapes.

The place has deep roots in the region's history. Tradition holds that in 1555 the Franciscan friar Jerónimo de Mendoza celebrated the first Catholic Mass here, in the lands that would later become Nueva Vizcaya, the colonial province that covered much of northern Mexico.

Today Los Berros is best known for its balnearios, simple family pools filled with spring water, which draw crowds from Durango on hot weekends. Even if you don't swim, it is a pleasant place to walk under the trees and have a picnic in the shade.
