    About Villa Tejúpam de la Unión

    Villa Tejúpam de la Unión is a town in the Upper Mixteca, in the Teposcolula district, at about 2,100 m. The parish church was built in 1613, and its atrium and the convent of Santiago Apóstol remain the most visible things in town. In 1889 the place received its present name, "de la Unión", and in 1891 it was recognised as a pueblo.

    The population figures tell a hard story: 3,409 people in 1900, only 1,289 by 1940, a low of 692 in 1970, and a slow recovery to 1,168 in 2020. About half of those over 12 are employed; the number of inhabited homes fell from 470 to 333 between 2010 and 2020, reflecting the emigration typical of the region.

    The landscape around is dry, with arid slopes, typical of the Upper Mixteca, and Cerro Yucuayu (2,294 m) and Cerro Yucushina (2,464 m) on the skyline. Most homes have electricity and piped water, 85% have a mobile phone and over half have internet. There is no lodging in the village: the nearest is 13 to 17 km away, around Teposcolula, so it works as a pass-through stop or a visit from there. Teposcolula, about 24 km south, has the great convent complex of San Pedro y San Pablo.

    Drive from Huajuapan de León: 50 min, 52 km

    From Teposcolula it is about 24 km north (approx. 30 minutes by car). From Oaxaca city the Mixteca route passes Nochixtlán, where toll road 135D and federal highway 190 meet, and continues toward Teposcolula; we found no published total time or exact turn-off to Tejúpam, so check the last stretch on a current map.

    We found no timetable for a direct bus or colectivo to Tejúpam. The practical way is to reach Teposcolula and take a taxi or ask about local transport from there. If driving, fill up in Teposcolula. There is mobile signal in town (about 85% of homes have a phone); there is no lodging, so plan to return to Teposcolula.
