    About Concepción Buenavista

    The fiesta of the Virgin of the Conception, on 8 and 9 December, is when Concepción Buenavista fills up. It is the seat of a municipality in the Coixtlahuaca district of the Mixteca, at about 2,124 metres. In 2020 the village had 277 residents and the whole municipality about 828 (2005) across 357 km², one of the least populated in Oaxaca. It peaked at 1,181 in the 1960 count and has fallen since.

    The fiesta starts on the 6th and 7th with the calenda led by the Virgin's godfather, goes on with a novena from the 7th to the 9th, with mayordomía, sports, jaripeo and a popular dance, and closes with the octave on the 14th and 15th. Visitors come from Tepelmeme, Coixtlahuaca, Tlacotepec Plumas and the municipality's agencies. Fiesta meals are mole, barbacoa, tamales and pozole with champurrado and locally made mezcal. The agencies have their own: San Miguel Aztatla, 29 September to 1 October; Las Palmas, 12 and 13 October; El Enebro, 13 and 14 October; and Santa Cruz Corunda, from 2 and 3 May.

    The municipality quarries stone: pink cantera from La Pedrera hill, about 3 km northwest of the seat, and white cantera near Aztatla. Palm hats are also woven. There are archaeological remains on Cerro del Jazmín, in Aztatla. The parish of the Inmaculada Concepción belongs to the Diocese of Huajuapan.

    There is no established market in town: people buy at supply stores and small shops and go to Tehuacán for food.

    How to get to Concepción Buenavista

    Drive from Tehuacán: 1 h 5 min, 87 km

    Concepción Buenavista is about 4.5 km from the Cuacnopalan-Tehuacán-Oaxaca toll road (135D): roughly 2 km of that is paved and roughly 2.5 km dirt. From Oaxaca city it is about 178 km by that road, and from Tehuacán, Puebla about 65 km as the crow flies (more by road). The other road heads southeast toward Tlacotepec Plumas, Magdalena Jicotlán, Teotongo and Tamazulapam, about 40 km, only a third of it paved. All dirt roads worsen in the rains (June to September).

    By public transport we found no current line or timetable. A few years ago the company AU ran Tehuacán to the municipal seat only at weekends, leaving Tehuacán on Friday at 17:00 and returning Saturday and Sunday; confirm before relying on it. The usual approach is to take a bus along the toll road (Puebla-Oaxaca lines), get off at the junction or at Tamazulapam and ask for local transport there. The village has had no reliable mobile coverage or landline, and signal may be nil: let people know when you arrive. Teposcolula is about 42 km away as the crow flies.
