    About San José Miahuatlán

    Miahuatlán comes from Nahuatl miahuatl, maize ear, and tlan, place of abundance: 'where maize ears abound'. San José is the patron saint. The town is the seat of the municipality of the same name, founded in 1826, covering about 336 km² and bordering San Gabriel Chilac, Altepexi and Zinacatepec to the north, Zapotitlán Salinas to the west, Caltepec and the state of Oaxaca to the south, and Coxcatlán to the east.

    The seat's population grew from 3,129 in 1900 to 2,496 in 1960, its low point, then to 3,883 in 1970, 7,301 in 2000, 8,016 in 2010 and 8,786 in 2020. Next in size among the municipality's localities are San José Axuxco (1,882), San Pedro Tetitlán (1,244), San Jerónimo Axochitlán (1,164) and San Mateo Tlacoxcalco (878).

    The municipality is sugar-cane country; Milenio lists it among Puebla's cane-growing municipalities hit by severe drought. The landscape is the dry land of the Tehuacán valley, with columnar cacti such as Cephalocereus seen from motorway 135D, south of the seat.

    How to get to San José Miahuatlán

    Drive from Tehuacán: 30 min, 33 km

    San José Miahuatlán is in southern Puebla, about 22 km from Tehuacán in a straight line (approx. 25 minutes by car) and about 49 km from Huautla (approx. 55 minutes, more through the sierra bends). From Puebla or Mexico City the most direct plan is to reach Tehuacán, which receives buses from the CAPU and TAPO, then continue by road to the south. The 135D Cuacnopalan-Oaxaca toll motorway runs south of the town, according to Wikimedia Commons captions, and is the fast road towards Oaxaca. No fixed timetable of combis or local buses to the seat is published; ask at the Tehuacán terminal.
