    About San José Axuxco

    Axuxco is the second-largest locality in San José Miahuatlán municipality, with 1,882 residents in 2020, behind the seat. Its patron is San José. An older description credited it with about 4,000 people, a figure the recent census does not support; the INEGI number is the one to trust.

    The economy rests on sugar cane, sold to a nearby mill. Melon, maize, tomato and huaje are grown too. It is a hot-country village in the south of Puebla, where drought often hits the region's cane-growing municipalities.

    Two places give the landscape its identity. One is the salt-water spring called Petlanco, a Nahuatl word translated as 'water that comes out between the rocks'. The other is Tepetroja hill, where wild boar, badgers, white-tailed deer, pumas and macaws are reported. The community takes part in the activities called by the town council and the village schools.

    How to get to San José Axuxco

    Drive from Tehuacán: 40 min, 40 km

    Axuxco is in southern Puebla, about 32 km from Tehuacán in a straight line (approx. 35 to 45 minutes by car) and about 39 km from Huautla (approx. 45 minutes, though the real road through the sierra bends and takes longer). The municipal seat, San José Miahuatlán, is about 10 km to the northwest. The 135D Cuacnopalan-Oaxaca motorway passes south of San José Miahuatlán, and from there local roads lead on to Axuxco. By bus, start from Tehuacán's terminal, which receives services from Puebla (CAPU) and Mexico City (TAPO). No combi timetable to Axuxco is published; ask in Tehuacán or San José Miahuatlán.
