About Cuitzala

Cuitzala is a rural community in the municipality of Coyomeapan in south-eastern Puebla, in high mountain country at about 2,250 to 2,270 m. It had 446 people in 2020 and is a highly marginalised community. Many residents speak Nahuatl, and the community keeps its traditions.

It is surrounded by montane cloud forest, with pines, ocote, oaks and other mid-sized trees, home to coyotes, opossums, rabbits, small birds and birds of prey. The economy is subsistence farming: native maize, squash, peaches, criollo avocados and granadilla, sometimes sold in local or regional markets. The community is run by traditional offices: inspector, justice of the peace, secretary, treasurer and topiles, each with a deputy.

The main festivals are the Virgin of Juquila on 8 December and the Virgin of Guadalupe on 12 December, with religious services and community gatherings. The municipality of Coyomeapan is high mountain country, forested and rainy all year, and mostly Nahua; since 2000 migration to the United States has grown. It is reached by road from Tehuacán via Coxcatlán.
