About Reserva de la Biosfera Tehuacán-Cuicatlán

Between south-eastern Puebla and northern Oaxaca, the Tehuacán-Cuicatlán Biosphere Reserve protects about 490,000 hectares in 51 municipalities, 21 in Puebla and 30 in Oaxaca. It takes its name from its two main towns, and its offices are in Tehuacán. It was decreed on 11 September 1998, on top of conservation zones Puebla and Oaxaca had declared shortly before in the Cuicatlán, Tehuacán and Zapotitlán valleys, and on 2 July 2018 UNESCO inscribed it as a mixed natural and cultural World Heritage Site.

What you see are arid valleys ringed by ranges under 3,000 m: the Tehuacán and Zapotitlán valleys and the Cuicatlán canyon, in the upper Papaloapan basin. Contrary to what many assume, this dry tropics is extremely rich: botanists treat it as a floristic province of its own, and since the 1960s about a third of its plants have been reckoned endemic. Xeric scrub dominates, with its forests of columnar cacti, followed by tropical dry forest and temperate woodland, and there is even a patch of cloud forest.

Mesoamerican farming began here. People have lived in the area continuously for some 12,000 years, and in the Coxcatlán cave Richard MacNeish found maize cobs from around 5000 BC, preserved by the extreme dryness. Today at least eight indigenous peoples live in the reserve, Mixtec, Cuicatec, Ixcatec, Nahua, Chocholtec, Popoloca, Chinantec and Mazatec, who still work the land on condition they do not damage it.
