Waterfall 8 km east of Pinal de Amoles
A 30-meter waterfall in a valley of poplars, reached by an easy river trail off Highway 120 toward Jalpan.
El Chuveje is a waterfall of roughly 30 to 35 meters in the Sierra Gorda Biosphere Reserve, on the warm, lower side of the mountains between Pinal de Amoles and Jalpan. Below the fall the stream spreads into a series of shallow natural pools shaded by tall poplars.
It is the easiest of the Sierra Gorda waterfalls to visit. The path follows the river through the woods for about 4 kilometers, with little climbing, so it suits families. Along the way you may see white-tailed deer and many birds, and in the August rains the forest fills with fireflies at dusk.
The pools are good for a dip in the dry season. During the rainy season the river can rise quickly, and swimming in the waterfall and river is not allowed then, so check conditions at the entrance. There are spots for picnics and camping near the trail.
What to see and do
Walk the shaded river trail through the poplar woods to the fall.
Cool off in the shallow pools below the waterfall in the dry season.
Watch for deer and birds along the path.
