Cave 20 km north of Pinal de Amoles
One of the world's deepest open pits, about 450 m deep and home to wild military macaws; a 2–3 hour uphill hike from Santa María de los Cocos.
The Sótano del Barro is a colossal sinkhole in the mountains of Arroyo Seco municipality, north of Pinal de Amoles and northwest of Jalpan. It is about 455 meters deep, with a sheer drop of roughly 410 meters, and its mouth measures some 420 meters across at its widest. That makes it one of the deepest open-air pits in the world, and one of the great natural sights of the Sierra Gorda.
Its fame goes beyond its size. The walls of the pit shelter a colony of military macaws, the large green guacamaya verde, one of the most important populations of this endangered parrot in Mexico. The birds leave the pit in the morning and return in the late afternoon, and seeing them circle above the void, calling loudly, is the reason most people make the trip.
The Sótano lies inside the Sierra Gorda Biosphere Reserve, and descending into it is strictly forbidden to protect the macaws. You see it from the rim, which requires a long hike through the forest. It is a full-day outing best done with a local guide, and the reward is a view few travelers ever see.
What to see and do
Hike the forest trail up from Santa María de los Cocos to the rim of the pit.
Look down into the 400-meter void from the edge, keeping a safe distance.
Wait for the military macaws to fly out in the morning or return in the late afternoon.
Watch for other birds and orchids in the forest on the way up.
Getting there
Although the Sótano is close to Pinal de Amoles in a straight line, the usual access is through Jalpan: drive down Highway 120 to Jalpan, take Highway 69 north, turn west a little past kilometer 24 and follow about 28 km of dirt road to Santa María de los Cocos. From there it is roughly a 7 km uphill walk, 2 to 3 hours each way, on foot or by mule. Start very early, take water and go with a local guide or a tour from Jalpan.
