    About San Miguel Canoa

    San Miguel Canoa is a junta auxiliar, a sub-municipal town, of the municipality of Puebla, about 12 km north-east of the capital on the slopes of the Malintzin volcano, La Malinche. INEGI's 2010 count gave it 14,863 inhabitants. It was the seat of its own municipality until 30 October 1962, when a decree abolished it and folded it into Puebla.

    It is a town of pre-Hispanic origin that the region's Franciscans evangelised; in 1640 it passed to the secular clergy. The town has a church of Jesús Nazareno.

    The town's name became tied to a terrible event. On 14 September 1968, amid the unrest of the student movement, five young workers from the University of Puebla who planned to climb La Malinche took shelter in Canoa because of bad weather. The parish priest, Enrique Meza Pérez, accused them without grounds of being communists, and a mob lynched them. Two of them died, as did Lucas García, the villager who had taken them in; three survived. Felipe Cazals turned the story into the film Canoa (1976).

    San Miguel Canoa lies about 12 km north-east of central Puebla, within the same municipality, on the way toward La Malinche. From Puebla it is roughly 25 to 30 minutes by car. The nearest Pueblo Mágico is Ixtenco in Tlaxcala, about 21 km away in a straight line on the far side of La Malinche.
