About Acolman de Nezahualcóyotl

Acolman, often called San Agustín Acolman, is the municipal seat of the municipality of the same name, about 40 km northeast of Mexico City and a short hop from the pyramids of Teotihuacan. The 2020 census counted 6,449 people in the town itself; most of the municipality's 171,000-plus residents live elsewhere, above all in Tepexpan. The name comes from Nahuatl Ahcolli, usually rendered as the place where the waters twist. It was a Nahua town paying tribute to Texcoco, and in 1877 it took on the name Nezahualcóyotl.

What most visitors come for is the old Augustinian convent, built in the 16th century and covered on its own page here: a Plateresque doorway, a cloister with wall paintings and an INAH viceregal museum. Around it the town keeps a small-town street plan and likes to call itself the cradle of the Christmas piñata. Tradition says the first one was broken at the convent more than four hundred years ago, and the first posadas are said to have started here too.

That makes December the busy month. The Feria de la Posada y la Piñata fills the Calzada de los Agustinos with food stalls, rides, dances, free concerts and contests for the biggest or most original piñata. Dates shift from year to year (in 2023 it ran 14 to 17 December), so check before going. At other times of year the town has horse races and staged posadas, and the municipality marks the Señor de Gracias on 3 May and its founding anniversary on 6 January.
