About Ocopulco

Ocopulco had 4,308 people in 2020 and sits around 2,261 m up; after the seat itself it is the largest community in Chiautla. The name is Nahuatl: ocotl, pine torch wood, plus pol or pul, which marks something large, and the locative co; the municipal history glosses it as "among the big ocote pines". A document dated 1793 records that this was the year it stopped being a barrio of La Encarnación Ocopulco and split from Tezoyuca as a pueblo, before being folded into Chiautla.

The church is the first thing to look at. It was built in 1800, and its bell tower is red tezontle because Cerro El Tezoyo is close by, and it stands out against the hills. Ocopulco also matters in the story of land reform: Avelino Buendía received Emiliano Zapata here in 1913 and occupied Hacienda La Grande with his followers on 20 November 1914, and the municipal history says the first Zapatista land grant went to this village, with the ejidos of Tlaltecahuacán, Ocopulco and Tezoyuca coming out of it. The Papalotla river crosses the community, and each 25 March there is a fireworks fiesta. Chiautla, the seat, is about 5 km away in a straight line, and the pueblo of Teotihuacán about 13.
