About Chicoloapan de Juárez

Chicoloapan de Juárez is the seat of the municipality of Chicoloapan, in the eastern State of Mexico, hemmed in by La Paz, Chimalhuacán, Ixtapaluca and Texcoco. The 2020 census gave it 193,532 residents, nearly the whole municipality (200,750). Its Nahuatl name, chicoloa plus apan, means twisted river; Juárez was added when it became a villa in 1885, and the parish carries the name San Vicente Mártir that the Jesuits gave the settlement. It is mostly a commuter city rather than a tourist stop, but it has layers of history that surprise.

The Catholic church of San Vicente dates from the 17th century; INAH has documented its mural painting, which is under restoration, and the parish was inaugurated in 1788. On the Cerro del Portezuelo lies an unexcavated archaeological zone, partly looted, and the municipality has yielded stone tools around 15,000 years old and a child's skull over 13,000 years old now shown in the Museo Nacional de Antropología. The Casa de Cultura in the centre is an easy landmark.

Local life runs on fiestas. 22 January is San Vicente Mártir, pilgrims come for San Judas Tadeo on the 28th of every month (strongest in October), the fields are blessed for San Isidro Labrador in May, and each barrio has its own patron, with mayordomías organising the fairs. Carnival brings parades and the burning of Juan Carnaval.

Local routes R-98, R-83 and R-107 also go to Mexico City, and several others use the México-Texcoco highway toward Ecatepec and Tultitlán. By car, take the México-Texcoco road out of La Paz; the city is about 24 km in a straight line from central Mexico City, and real travel time depends heavily on traffic. Teotihuacan is about 32 km away as the crow flies.
