Nature reserve 20 km south of Teotihuacán
A small national park around the ruins of a colonial mill hacienda in a wooded ravine east of Texcoco.
Molino de Flores Nezahualcóyotl is a small national park in a wooded ravine just east of Texcoco, built around the ruins of a colonial hacienda that ran a mill on the Coxcacuaco river. Over the centuries the estate grew into a large hacienda with a main house, chapels, granaries and workers' quarters, and its roofless walls, arches and courtyards now make an atmospheric place to wander.
President Lázaro Cárdenas declared the site a national park in 1937 to protect both the old hacienda and its surroundings, about 50 hectares of riverside woodland, scrub and grassland. More than 140 species of plants and animals have been recorded here, including hummingbirds and other birds along the river. The park is managed by the federal protected-areas commission, CONANP.
On weekends it is a popular family outing from Texcoco and the eastern side of Mexico City: people come to picnic by the river, walk the trails along the ravine, explore the hacienda buildings and eat at the food stands near the entrance. The Baños de Nezahualcóyotl on the Tetzcotzinco hill are only a few kilometers away, so the two combine well in one trip.
