About Santiago Cuautlalpan

Santiago Cuautlalpan lies in the south of Texcoco municipality, at about 2,250 m, between Coatlinchán to the north, Chicoloapan to the south, Chimalhuacán to the west and Ixtapaluca to the east. The Nahuatl name is explained as "place of the eagles' nest", and since 1994 it has held the political rank of villa. The geographer García Cubas reckoned about 632 inhabitants around 1888; the 2010 census counted 12,336.

There is no grand monument here, but there is an unusual trade: making trophies and metal structures. Spanish Wikipedia says this has been the main activity for some 50 years and ranks the town among the world's largest trophy producers; we found no second source for the ranking, so take it as the town's own claim. Clay griddles (comales) were also made once, a craft that has died out.

The church is the Templo de Santiago Apóstol, listed in the heritage catalogue, and the calendar revolves around it: 15 May is the feast of San Isidro Labrador, 25 July the annual fair of Santiago, and the last Sunday of the year the celebration of the Virgin of Guadalupe, called here the Virgen de la carretera. There is also a UAEM university campus and a public library, a sign of how the town has grown with the metropolitan area.

Cuautlalpan is in the south of Texcoco, right next to Coatlinchán, about 24 km in a straight line from Mexico City and some 30 km from Teotihuacán. From the capital, Texcoco is around 28 km by the Peñón-Texcoco expressway or the Los Reyes-Lechería federal road (Highway 136); Coatlinchán, the neighbour to the north, is on that federal road; Cuautlalpan lies south of it, in the same municipality. By public transport, Metro Line A runs from Pantitlán to La Paz (stations Los Reyes and La Paz), and from there local transport continues toward Texcoco and the southern communities; ask for the route to Cuautlalpan, as we found none published. Allow 45 minutes to an hour from eastern Mexico City, about.
