About Ciudad Nezahualcóyotl

Ciudad Nezahualcóyotl, known simply as Neza, is the seat of its municipality and one of the biggest cities in Mexico: the 2020 census counted 1,072,676 people in the city and 1,077,208 in the whole municipality. It stands on the dry bed of Lake Texcoco. The government began selling the drained land early in the 20th century; around 1949 an unplanned settlement of about 2,000 people lived here with no services, by 1954 there were roughly 40,000, and in April 1963 the municipality was recognised as number 120 of the State of Mexico. It is named for the poet-king of Texcoco, whose name means “fasting coyote”.

Do not come looking for colonial monuments. What you visit is present-day Neza. The sculpture “Coyote en ayuno” by Sebastián, who also made El Caballito in Mexico City, went up on a roundabout in 2009 and stands 40 metres tall, weighing 296 tonnes. Parque del Pueblo, 8.5 hectares opened in 1975, has a lake, a little tourist train, a bandstand and a municipal zoo now being rebuilt. The Catedral de Nezahualcóyotl opened on 20 November 2000, the Palacio Municipal dates from 1983, and the Jaime Torres Bodet cultural centre (1987) has a library and event hall.

The everyday side is worth a look too. The municipality has 45 tianguis street markets and 68 public markets, and the El Sol neighbourhood is known for more than 30 piñata workshops. The Estadio Neza 86, opened in 1981, has hosted concerts and matches, though it now looks neglected.

How to get to Ciudad Nezahualcóyotl

Drive from Mexico City: 25 min, 15 km

Neza borders eastern Mexico City, about 13 km in a straight line from the capital's centre; driving time depends heavily on traffic, so allow more than half an hour at rush hour. The Metro is the practical way in: Line B (Buenavista–Ciudad Azteca) has the stations Río de los Remedios, Impulsora and Nezahualcóyotl in the municipality, and at Villa de Aragón it links with Metrobús Line 6. Inside the city, Mexibús Line 3 runs from Pantitlán to Chimalhuacán with 25 stops along Avenidas Chimalhuacán, Villada and Bordo de Xochiaca (a 10-peso fare in 2026, per Wikipedia). Parque del Pueblo sits between Avenida Pantitlán and Avenida Chimalhuacán. Taxis, microbuses and combis also link to neighbouring municipalities. From Teotihuacán, the nearest pueblo on our list (about 37 km as the crow flies), allow about an hour or more and check the route on the day.
