    About La Purificación Tepetitla

    La Purificación Tepetitla is 7 km east of Texcoco's centre in a straight line, at 2,377 m, on the edge of the old lake system of the highland basin. It had 3,817 residents in 2020. Until 2010 it was simply La Purificación. Wikipedia says the name comes from an epidemic after the conquest: survivors settled here and recovered with medicinal plants and spring water; an Archivo General de la Nación document from 1738 already mentions Nuestra Señora de la Purificación. Tepetitla is read as "beside the hill of stones", though Wikipedia itself gives no source for that.

    The reason to come is the parish of the Purificación de María. It was begun in 1681 and finished in 1771, nearly ninety years later, in the Texcocan Baroque style with Mudéjar influence, in stone, tezontle and cantera with a well-proportioned tower. México Desconocido points to the tequitqui reliefs, which mix plant, human and animal forms with Christian images, and to some 16th-century elements. The main altarpiece, of carved wood covered in gold leaf, fills the back wall and dates to between 1740 and 1780. According to the historical records that magazine cites, the church stands where Nezahualcóyotl had a summer complex with gardens, water channels and a zoo.

    The patron is the Virgen de la Candelaria, celebrated on 2 February with masses and dances; there is also a carnival before Lent.

    How to get to La Purificación Tepetitla

    Drive from Mexico City: 45 min, 40 km

    La Purificación Tepetitla is about 7 km east of Texcoco de Mora's centre in a straight line and about 28 km (around 43 minutes by car) from San Martín de las Pirámides. From Mexico City the easiest way is an ADO bus to Texcoco from TAPO: they leave every 30 to 60 minutes, the trip takes about 40 minutes and cost about 50 pesos in April 2023 (Wikivoyage). From Texcoco continue by taxi or local transport east along Avenida Tepetitla; there is no published published timetable for local transport. A taxi or Uber from TAPO to Texcoco ran about 200 pesos in 2023. The village has no registered lodging; the nearest is about 4 km to the west.
