About Huitzilac

Huitzilac stands at 2,561 m, among pine, oyamel fir and oak forest in the Chichinautzin range, which makes it one of the coldest towns in Morelos: the average annual temperature is around 10 to 16 degrees and fog slips between the trees even on sunny days. The Nahuatl name means in the water of the hummingbirds. The 2020 census counted 5,347 people, making it the municipality's second-largest locality after Tres Marías.

The royal road from Mexico City to Cuernavaca ran through here, and the town was a stagecoach stop and a halt for huacaleros, the porters who carried goods on their backs in wooden crates; it had several inns for travellers. The railway of 1897 took that traffic away. The church of San Juan Bautista was finished in 1690, according to a carved stone, and the main festival is 19 March for San José, with another on 1 September. The town was burned in 1912 in the Zapatista fighting, and on 3 October 1927 General Francisco R. Serrano and his companions were killed on the road at km 47 of the federal highway.

What people look for here now is cold air and forest. Local food is mountain food: mutton barbacoa, trout, quesadillas, wild-mushroom soup and pulque, and woodworking is a local craft. About 13 to 15 km on, along the road toward Toluca, are the Lagunas de Zempoala, with trails, bikes and horses; the Chichinautzin biological corridor is home to more than 230 bird species.

How to get to Huitzilac

Drive from Cuernavaca: 20 min, 16 km

From Mexico City, take the Mexico-Cuernavaca toll road or the free road (95 and 95D) to Tres Marías, around km 47. There you turn off toward Huitzilac, a few kilometres away, on the road that continues to Toluca and the Lagunas de Zempoala. By car it is about 1.5 to 2 hours from the capital, depending on traffic; the toll road charges a fee.

By bus, the Central Sur (Tasqueña) terminal has Pullman de Morelos buses to Cuernavaca: ask to be dropped at Tres Marías and take another bus or colectivo from there to Huitzilac; from town you can continue by taxi or a Toluca-bound vehicle to the lakes. We found no direct service from Cuernavaca and no published schedule, so ask at the Cuernavaca terminal and find out the last run back, since there is little after dark. Cuernavaca is about 12 km away in a straight line, but the road is much longer: count on about 40 min, approx. Tepoztlán, the nearest pueblo on our list, is about 18 km as the crow flies, but there is no direct link and you go back down through Cuernavaca.
