About Fierro del Toro

At 2,959 m above sea level, Fierro del Toro is one of the highest settlements in Morelos and had just 204 residents in the 2020 census (125 in 2010 and about 100 in 2005). It belongs to the municipality of Huitzilac, sits in the Chichinautzin range and lives mostly from farming and livestock. The cold rules: an average near 10.9 °C, so bring a coat even when it is hot down in Cuernavaca.

Several volcanic cones around it serve as map landmarks: Volcán Cajete lies 1.4 km to the northwest, Tesoyo 1.8 km to the east, Cerro Tepeyahualco 2 km to the north and Volcán Raíces 3.2 km to the northwest. The land is meadow and pine forest, and a published photo shows a paved path crossing the valley between tall trees. The settlement falls within the Chichinautzin Biological Corridor, a flora and fauna protection area decreed in 1988.

It is not a place with tourist services. No lodging is registered in the locality; the closest listed by Pueblos América is Hotel El Zorro, about 14 km to the south. In the 2020 census 96% of homes had electricity and 23% piped water, and only 2% had internet, so arrive with supplies, a downloaded map and a full tank.

The date that brings the village together is January 1, when it celebrates the Holy Trinity.

How to get to Fierro del Toro

Drive from Cuernavaca: 35 min, 26 km

Fierro del Toro is up in the hills, about 5 km north of Huitzilac in a straight line and some 19 km from Cuernavaca (roughly 20 to 30 minutes by car, longer on the mountain road). From Mexico City take the México-Cuernavaca toll highway (95D) and exit at Huitzilac, at km 37, or follow the free road (95), which passes through Tres Marías and Huitzilac. From Huitzilac a road climbs north to the village. We found no official description of that last stretch, so download a map before leaving because signal is thin in the hills.

By bus, services run from Mexico City's Terminal Central del Sur (Taxqueña) to Huitzilac; from there you will need a taxi or a local colectivo. Tepoztlán, the nearest pueblo mágico, is about 30 to 37 km by road, around 40 minutes. Bring fuel and a coat, and avoid driving at night: state authorities have advised not stopping on the México-Cuernavaca road around Huitzilac and Tres Marías.
