About Bahía de Chahué

Chahué is the bay closest to La Crucecita, the town at the centre of Huatulco, and lies between Santa Cruz to the west and Tangolunda to the east, in the municipality of Santa María Huatulco. Its name is given in Zapotec as "fertile land" or "wet land". The main beach, Playa Chahué, is about 1 km east of Santa Cruz; the bay also takes in the smaller Esperanza and Tejón beaches.

The beach is broad, with soft sand and little natural shade, and is backed by green hills, hotels and a couple of beach clubs that sell day passes. The surf can be stronger than in the sheltered bays to the west, which keeps it quieter than Santa Cruz, and the beach clubs advise checking the sea before swimming. Chahué was one of Huatulco's three Blue Flag beaches in 2025, with Tangolunda and Santa Cruz.

At the western end of the bay is Marina Chahué, a small state-run marina about ten minutes' walk from La Crucecita. Sailors have reported that it silted up badly in 2018 and that the 2020 earthquake raised parts of the seabed, so deep-keeled yachts may have trouble getting in; flat-bottomed boats still use it. For a visitor the bay is an easy beach to reach on foot or by a short taxi ride from town, good for a walk at sunset.
