About Bahía El Órgano
El Órgano is a small bay just east of El Maguey, between Maguey and Santa Cruz, inside Huatulco National Park in the municipality of Santa María Huatulco. It takes its name from the organ-pipe cacti that grow on the slopes around it. The beach is about 240 m long and 20 m wide, with fine pale sand, a moderate slope and usually gentle waves.
No road reaches the beach and nothing has been built on it: there are no restaurants, palapas or other services, which is exactly what sets it apart from busy Maguey next door. The water is clear, turquoise near shore and deep blue further out, good for swimming and snorkelling. Some older references describe the bay as reachable only by boat, but a marked path of about 1 km now runs through the dry forest from the Maguey road down to the sand.
The park was decreed in 1998 and covers some 6,375 hectares of dry lowland forest plus 5,516 hectares of sea; signs along the trail ask walkers not to disturb wildlife. Boat tours of the bays from the Santa Cruz pier also stop or pass here. Because there is nothing on the beach, come with water, food and shade, and carry your rubbish out.
