About Playa La Entrega

Playa La Entrega is a sheltered beach of about 300 m on the outer edge of Santa Cruz bay, 2.5 km from the Santa Cruz marina along a winding road, or about five minutes by boat. Green hills close in on both sides, the water is usually calm and clear, and a row of seafood palapas runs along the back of the sand. It is the southernmost beach in the Santa Cruz area and one of the easiest places in Huatulco to snorkel straight from the shore.

The name, which means the handover, comes from one of the darkest episodes of Mexico's early republic. In January 1831 the former president and independence hero Vicente Guerrero was invited to lunch aboard the brig Colombo in Acapulco by its Genoese captain, Francesco Picaluga, who had been paid by the Bustamante government to betray him. Picaluga sailed to Huatulco and handed Guerrero over on this beach to army officers waiting for him. Guerrero was taken inland, tried, and shot at Cuilápam, near Oaxaca City, on 14 February 1831.

Today the beach is all about the water. A shallow coral platform lies just off the sand, and a roped-off area keeps boats away from swimmers and snorkellers, who can see small reef fish, pufferfish, sea urchins and sea cucumbers within a few metres of the shore. Masks and fins can be rented or bought from vendors on the beach. It is a popular stop for snorkel tours and can get crowded.
