Playa La Boquilla

Playa La Boquilla is a small sandy cove on the coast east of Puerto Ángel, in the municipality of San Pedro Pochutla, roughly 5 km from the town along the shore. Its name, "the little mouth", describes its shape: the bay is wide where it opens to the sea and narrows toward the beach. The strip of golden sand is only about 120 m long, framed by wooded hills and rocky points, and it is one of several small coves on this stretch, with La Mina and Estacahuite between it and Puerto Ángel.

The cove is sheltered and fairly shallow, and the water is usually clear, which makes it one of the better spots around Puerto Ángel for snorkelling and swimming, as well as kayaking and paddleboarding. On some days, though, swell rolls in and breaks right on the sand, so check the sea before going in with children. A hotel of a dozen bungalows, Bahía de la Luna, is spread over the hillside above the beach with a restaurant, and there are a couple of shaded places to eat on the sand, some of them open only in high season.

There are two ways in. The pleasant one is by boat from Puerto Ángel, hired at the pier or on Playa del Panteón, which lets you see the rocky coast on the way. By land, an unpaved road of about 3.5 km branches off the Puerto Ángel to Pochutla road around 4 km out of town; it is rough, best done in a sturdy vehicle, and some taxi drivers refuse it in the rainy season.
