    About Beristáin

    Beristáin is a village in the municipality of Ahuazotepec in north-western Puebla, in the western part of the sierra that belongs to the Sierra Madre Oriental. It had 2,302 people in 2020 and stands at about 2,180 m. The municipality, whose Nahuatl name means "on the hill of the old oak", borders Huauchinango to the north, Zacatlán to the south and east, and Acaxochitlán, in the state of Hidalgo, to the west. It belonged to the district of Huauchinango until 1895, when it became a free municipality.

    The landscape is one of ravines and pine-oak forest, especially in the north and south-east of the municipality, crossed by the Totolapa and Tlachinalco rivers, which join. Wildlife includes opossums, squirrels, rabbits and field rats.

    Beristáin's festival is for Saint Joseph, patron of its church: on 19 March the whole village gathers to thank the saint, with parades and family events, and the fair runs until 22 March. In the municipal seat, Ahuazotepec, stands the 16th-century church of San Nicolás de Tolentino, and at Holy Week the transport fair has been held for over 50 years, with pilgrimages and the robenos, costumed young men who join the processions.

    Beristáin lies in the municipality of Ahuazotepec in north-western Puebla, next to the Hidalgo line. The Pueblo Mágico of Acaxochitlán in Hidalgo is about 11 km away in a straight line, and Tulancingo about 24 km. Huauchinango, to the north, is the nearest Puebla town of any size. Puebla city is about 117 km away in a straight line.
