    About San Pedro Tlachichilco

    Tlachichilco means in the red earth: it comes from Nahuatl tlalli, earth, chiltic, red, and the suffix co, which marks a place. Saint Peter, the patron, supplies the first half of the full name. The village stands at 2,183 metres, about 7.5 km west of Acaxochitlán, the municipal seat, in the Tulancingo Valley on sierra terrain within the Neovolcanic Axis province.

    The climate is temperate sub-humid, with summer rain and more moisture than other temperate zones of the state. Water in the area runs to the Metztitlán sub-basin of the Moctezuma basin.

    The census shows a village that has ebbed and flowed: 769 people in 1900, 1,278 in 1910, 994 in 1950, 1,925 in 1990 and a small dip to 1,796 in 2005, before rising to 2,318 in 2020 (1,096 men and 1,222 women, in 567 homes). That is about 5% of the municipality's population.

    The centre of the village is taken up by the Church of San Pedro Apóstol, facing the main square, and the patron-saint festival of Saint Peter is held there.
