About Metepec Primero
The name Metepec comes from Nahuatl: metl, maguey, and tepetl, hill, so "on the maguey hills". Primero tells it apart from Metepec Segundo. The community lies in the Tulancingo Valley, at 2,141 metres, at the southern tip of the municipality of Acatlán and about 2 km from the municipal seat, on flat ground with a semi-dry temperate climate. Its water reaches the Metztitlán sub-basin.
The censuses show it steady: 1,270 residents in 2010 and 1,215 in 2020 (647 women, 568 men), with 336 occupied homes, 5.46% of the municipality. It is much larger than the seat itself, Acatlán, which has 439 residents, in a municipality of 22,268 people that lives from farming, livestock, trade, the timber industry and dairy processing.
What is worth a visit is in Acatlán. The church and former convent of San Miguel Arcángel was built by the Augustinians between 1544 and 1569: a sober façade with a small bell gable, an inner courtyard and cloisters with round arches. The atrium keeps the remains of a cemetery. In September the Expo Acatlán brings dairy and crafts sales, sports events and cultural activities.
