About Tezoquipa

Tezoquipa is built from Nahuatl roots: tetl, stone, and zoquitl, mud, plus the ending pan. The old glyph shows a stone with mud on top, and the name is read as the place of mud in a stony field. Peñafiel recorded it that way in 1897 in his Nomenclatura geográfica de México.

The village sits at 2,220 metres in rolling and flat ground of the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt, about 2.4 kilometres west of Cuautepec de Hinojosa, the municipal seat, which now has over 20,000 people. The climate is temperate and sub-humid with summer rain, and water from the area drains to the Metztitlán sub-basin.

For most of its history Tezoquipa was a very small hamlet: 222 people in 1900 and only 37 in 1940. Since 1950 the population has kept rising, to the 1,031 residents of the 2020 census, living in 275 occupied homes. INEGI rates its marginalisation as medium and its social lag as very low.

By coordinates its neighbour Ventoquipa, already in Santiago Tulantepec, is only a few hundred metres away: the two localities nearly touch.

How to get to Tezoquipa

Drive from Tulancingo: 10 min, 8 km

Tezoquipa is about 6 km in a straight line from central Tulancingo (roughly 5 to 10 minutes by car, per the brief's estimate) and 2.4 km west of the municipal seat, Cuautepec de Hinojosa, so almost any route to Cuautepec works as an approach. Acaxochitlán, the nearest Pueblo Mágico, is about 20 km in a straight line, roughly 25 minutes.

Without a car, the simplest way is to reach Tulancingo or Cuautepec on local public transport and cover the last stretch by taxi or on foot. From Pachuca or Mexico City, go to Tulancingo first.
