About Los Romeros

Los Romeros lies in the Tulancingo Valley, at 2,313 metres, in the municipality of Santiago Tulantepec de Lugo Guerrero. The terrain is rolling hills and the climate semi-dry and temperate; the local water feeds the Metztitlán river sub-basin. With 2,047 inhabitants in 2020 it is the municipality's fifth locality and holds 5.17% of its population.

Its census history has ups and downs: 293 people in 1900, 840 in 1950 and a peak of 1,523 in 1970; it then dropped to 1,174 in 1980, hovered around 1,500 until 2000, fell to 1,199 in 2005 and recovered to pass 2,000. The big date in the village calendar is November, when the patron festival honours the Virgin of the Miraculous Medal.

The community cemetery is the corner that has been best documented: an entrance facade and rows of graves that appear in freely licensed photographs on Wikimedia Commons. Otherwise Los Romeros is visited as part of the farming landscape of the Tulancingo Valley, a short drive from the city that gives the valley its name.
