About Santiago Tulantepec

Santiago Tulantepec began as a mill rather than a village. On 2 August 1565 Viceroy Gastón de Peralta granted permission for a wheat mill here, which is why old maps label the place Santiago or El Molino de Santiago; in colonial times it ranked among the country's largest flour producers. The mill later passed to a Spaniard who founded the El Castillo works, a workshop of old looms whose facade still stands. In 1888 Martín Urrutia and partners bought it, English machinery arrived by rail in the early 20th century, and in 1907 Mexico's first casimir woollen cloth came off its looms. The name joins the patron saint, St James the Greater, with Nahuatl Tulantepec, "hill of reeds".

The town, with 17,449 residents in 2020, lies in the Tulancingo Valley at 2,174 metres, on low hills with a dry temperate climate and rain from May to September. Downtown stand the Monumental Clock, inaugurated in 1966 and one of nine in Hidalgo, and the church of Santiago Apóstol, with thick volcanic-stone walls, tall windows and a central dome. On the outskirts are the old Ventoquipa station on the National Railways' line H, which linked the valley with Mexico City, Cuautepec, Beristain and Honey; the Los Cangrejos springs, where locals gather on hot days; and the old Santiago Textil factory. The Zazacuala Museum shows finds from the archaeological site of the same name, occupied from the Classic period and showing Teotihuacan influence.

On 25 July, the feast of St James, the celebrations include the Santiagada, when heifers and mid-sized bulls are let loose in the streets for anyone who wants to fight them, and the cucaña, a greased pole almost 30 metres long laid over a water tank with a red flag at its tip. The sanctuary of the Virgin of Fátima marks every 8 February the apparition that, by tradition, a 13-year-old boy hunting rabbits saw in 1962.
