About Santa Ana Tzacuala
Santa Ana Tzacuala sits at 2,209 metres above sea level in the Sierra de Tenango, roughly 10 km north of Acaxochitlán by INEGI's reckoning. The 2020 census counted 4,050 residents in 840 homes, close to 9% of the municipality, and since 2010 the neighbouring Barrio Verde has been joined to it. The name pairs the patron saint, Saint Anne, with Cerro Tzacuala; tzacualli is a Nahuatl word read as 'to clear up' or 'to hold back water', and also as a mound or idol shrine.
What people mention most is the reservoir that carries the village's name. It is eight to ten metres deep and is used mainly for fishing, camping and outdoor outings. Around it there are stands of trees, a small park with grass courts and grills, and two restaurants; the water looks semi-transparent and the place suits long walks.
The climate is temperate and humid, with heavy summer rain, and the land is sierra: forested slopes that drain to the San Marcos river in the Cazones basin. Bring a jacket even in the dry months, since mornings and evenings are cool at this height. The visit works best when paired with Acaxochitlán, whose clock tower and parish church are a few kilometres away.
