Viewpoint 3 km southwest of Pahuatlán
Flower-growing hamlet at 1,750 meters with a lookout over Pahuatlán, a launch point for paragliding and seas of cloud.
High on the mountainside above Pahuatlán, the small community of Ahila sits at about 1,750 meters, and from its lookout the whole valley opens up below: the town's roofs and church, the deep ravines toward San Pablito and Xolotla, and ridge after ridge of the Sierra Norte fading into the distance.
The height and the steady air make Ahila the area's paragliding spot, and tandem flights with a pilot launch from the slopes and glide down over the valley toward town. On many days, especially around midday or at sunset, clouds fill the valley below and the viewpoint looks out over a sea of white.
Ahila is also a farming community, known for growing flowers, and its fields add color to the slopes. The surrounding trails are used for hiking, birdwatching and downhill mountain biking. For the clearest views, come in the drier months, roughly March to May; in the rainy season fog can hide everything for hours.
