About Antigua hacienda de Exquitlán

The old Exquitlán hacienda, also known as the hacienda del Pomar, stands on the outskirts of Tulancingo on the way to Cuautepec de Hinojosa, near the San Miguel municipal cemetery and the Capilla de la Expiración. It was built for Pánfilo García Otamendi, who owned several haciendas around Mexico. Inscriptions on the house, over the door lintel and on an urn in the front garden, give its dates: work began in 1868 and it was inaugurated in 1908. The chapel came first, since every hacienda was expected to have one; it was finished in July 1901 and is dedicated to St Basil, whose name appears on its front. The estate had its heyday under Porfirio Díaz.

The main house has 20 rooms, including several sitting and dining rooms, with plaster reliefs of angels, cherubs, landscapes and women's faces, and art nouveau decoration on the ceilings. The large garden holds the chapel, stables, storerooms and some small underground chambers.

Today the estate is split in two. The better-kept part belongs to the Bodegas de Exquitlán cider works, which runs from newer industrial buildings, and is the home of Pomar cider, sold across Mexico above all at Christmas. The mansion itself shows its age but keeps its original look. Local lore has grown around it, from ghosts to a coffin found outside its grave and a buried fortune nobody has found, and in the mid-2000s it hosted haunted-house tours in October.
