    About Santa María Acuexcomac

    Santa María Acuexcomac is a junta auxiliar of the municipality of San Pedro Cholula, in the Cholula valley west of the city. Its name joins its patron, the Virgin Mary, with the Nahuatl Acuexcomac, from atl, water, cuexcomatl, the region's clay granary, and co, in: "at the water store". It stands at about 2,160 m and had 4,817 people in 2020.

    The municipality of San Pedro Cholula had 138,433 people in the 2020 census and is part of the Puebla-Tlaxcala metropolitan area; its seat is Cholula de Rivadavia. Its land shows human settlement from the Middle Preclassic, between the 12th and 4th centuries BC, more than thirty centuries of continuous life. Ancient Cholollan was one of Mesoamerica's great ceremonial centres, until the massacre carried out by Hernán Cortés and his Tlaxcalan allies in October 1519. Films such as Enamorada (1946), by Emilio "el Indio" Fernández, and Talpa (1955) were shot in the municipality.

    Acuexcomac is one of the farming villages around Cholula, set among fields, as the satellite view shows, with the status of a junta auxiliar.
