Tianguismanalco

Tianguismanalco is the seat of the municipality of the same name in west-central Puebla, at the foot of the Sierra Nevada crowned by Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl, in the region of the Atlixco and Matamoros valleys. The name comes from the Nahuatl tianquiztli, market, manalli, to flatten, and co, in: "at the levelled market". The village stands at about 2,150 m and had 5,782 people in 2020; the municipality, created in 1895, had 9,807 in 2010.

North-north-west of the village lies the Nealtican malpaís, a mound of volcanic sand and rock forming the easternmost flank of Popocatépetl. Despite its name, it sits almost entirely within the municipality of Tianguismanalco. It is covered in dense pine-oak forest crossed by a few paths used for walks, and because of the rough ground human activity there has always been limited; along its edges the stony ground is quarried for tezontle.

The municipality, about 134 km², lies between 1,940 and 2,220 m. It borders San Nicolás de los Ranchos, Nealtican, San Jerónimo Tecuanipan, Santa Isabel Cholula, Atlixco and Tochimilco, and its seat is just 7 km from the Pueblo Mágico of Atlixco.
