About Cháhuac

Cháhuac, also called the Colonia de Cháhuac, is a hamlet in the municipality of Domingo Arenas in west-central Puebla, 7.5 km from the municipal seat; it is the municipality's most outlying community. The name comes from the Nahuatl Chiahuac, "muddy or marshy place". Its square stands at about 2,280 m. It had 778 inhabitants in 2010, 11.2% of the municipal population, and 998 in 2020.

At the end of the pre-Hispanic era part of this land, known as Chiahualco, belonged to the Indigenous nobility: its main owner was the tecutli Juan Xuárez, successor of Tecayehuatzin, who ruled Huexotzinco under the name Quecéhuatl when Hernán Cortés arrived. In 1602 and 1607 the Crown granted plots of land at Cháhuac to Diego de Bermeo. Under Porfirio Díaz the place was the Cháhuac estate of Alberto García Granados; in 1911 rebels looted it, in 1912 the Zapatistas took it, and in 1918, by then owned by Rafael García Granados, a presidential ruling took over 200 hectares from it to give communal land to the village of San Simón Tlanicontla. Between 1939 and 1942 Cháhuac came under Xaltepetlapa, until the boundary decree was repealed.

The shell of the former hacienda and the church of San Agustín remain from the past. The municipality of Domingo Arenas was created on 12 May 1942 and is part of the San Martín Texmelucan metropolitan area; its villages, Xaltepetlapa and Tlanicontla, were founded by Chichimec groups in the early 14th century.
