About Muñoz

Muñoz is the seat of the municipality of Muñoz de Domingo Arenas, in northern Tlaxcala, at about 2,487 metres above sea level. At the 2020 census it had 2,477 residents, the largest of the municipality's 13 localities, followed by San José Cuamantzingo with 1,345 and Guadalupe Cuauhtémoc with 561. The municipality is named for the Tlaxcalan revolutionary Domingo Arenas, who was born in Zacatelco.

The area was formerly known as Zacatepec, from Nahuatl, "hill of grass". The community came to be called Muñoz after Don Daniel Muñoz, owner of the former Zacatepec hacienda, and the railway station was named Estación Muñoz; according to the municipal account it was inaugurated by President Sebastián Lerdo de Tejada. The line was strategically important during the Revolution, and land reform afterwards broke up the haciendas. Another railway trace is the sleeper plant, which stopped operating in the early 1990s.

The village centres on a plaza with a red-brick bandstand. Places named in the municipality include Estación Muñoz, Estación de Guadalupe, the Contenango lagoon, the Zacatepec ranch and the communities of Cuamantzingo and Chipila. Its soils are used for livestock, forestry and farming. Dates celebrated include 3 May (Holy Cross), 12 December (Virgin of Guadalupe), carnival in February or March and Holy Week.
