About Coetzapotitla
Coetzapotitla belongs to Coetzala, the smallest municipality in Veracruz: just 26.3 km² and five localities. Of those five it is the second largest, with 904 residents in 2020 (459 women and 445 men). It lies a few kilometres southwest of the municipal seat, on the road that carries on toward Zongolica, along the edge where the Córdoba valley starts breaking up into the hills of the sierra.
The name is Nahuatl and joins three words: quetzal, zápotl (sapote) and tlan, a suffix meaning abundance, giving roughly "place where the sapote quetzal abounds". Coetzala, the seat, also carries the quetzal in its name.
The census shows slow but steady growth: 235 people in 1900, 312 in 1910, 500 in 1960, 672 in 2000 and 813 in 2010. Connections have been limited: in 2020 fewer than half the homes had a mobile phone and almost none had internet, so do not count on a good signal.
The municipality's main feast is that of Saint Mary Magdalene, patron of Coetzala, on 22 July. Coetzala borders Amatlán de los Reyes, Naranjal, Cuichapa, Tezonapa and Zongolica.
How to get to Coetzapotitla
Drive from Córdoba: 25 min, 23 km
From central Córdoba, the nearest Pueblo Mágico, it is about 23 km and some 27 minutes: leave by Avenida 11 onto the Córdoba–Amatlán state road and further on follow the road that runs beside the railway to Coetzala, where the road to Zongolica begins. From Coetzala, the municipal seat, it is about 5.7 km, around 7 minutes, on that same road. From Orizaba it is about 44 km, roughly 45 minutes, on the 150D toll road to Córdoba and then the Amatlán route. Long-distance buses arrive at Córdoba's bus station; we found no published timetable for transport to Coetzapotitla, so a taxi or local transport from Córdoba or Amatlán is the safe bet.
