About Celestún
Celestún sits in the far northwest corner of Yucatán, on a thin sand bar between the Gulf of Mexico and the Ría Celestún, a shallow estuary about 20 kilometers long where fresh water from underground springs mixes with the sea. The estuary and the coast around it make up the Ría Celestún Biosphere Reserve, a little over 81,000 hectares that straddle the border with Campeche. It was first protected as a wildlife refuge in 1979, became a biosphere reserve in 2000 and has been a Ramsar wetland of international importance since 2004.
Most visitors come for the American flamingos. The brackish, shallow water is full of the small crustaceans that give them their color, and the estuary is one of the main places they feed on the peninsula. They are most numerous from roughly November to March, often in groups of hundreds; in spring many fly east to nest at Ría Lagartos, so sightings are less certain in the warmer months. Herons, pelicans, cormorants and ospreys are easy to see all year, and well over a hundred other bird species have been recorded here.
Boat trips leave from the dock by the bridge at the entrance to town. A typical ride heads up the estuary to the flamingos, slips through a tunnel of mangroves, stops at the Baldiosera freshwater spring for a swim, and passes the bosque petrificado, a stretch of trees killed by salt water and bleached white. The town itself is small and unhurried, about 8,000 people who live mostly from fishing, with a wide beach lined with seafood restaurants. People were already gathering salt and fish on this coast before the Spanish arrived; the town was founded in the early 18th century and became its own municipality in 1918.
How to get to Celestún
Drive from Mérida: 1 h 25 min, 90 km
Celestún is about 90 km west of Mérida, roughly an hour and a half by car: take Highway 281 through Hunucmá and Kinchil, the only road in, which ends at the town. Second-class buses leave Mérida's Noreste terminal (Calle 67 with Calle 50) about every hour from early morning to evening and take a little over two hours. From Sisal there is no coastal road, so you drive back inland to Hunucmá and then west, about an hour and a quarter. Boats leave from the dock by the bridge before the town; prices are per boat, so it pays to share.
