About Museo Regional de Guerrero

The Museo Regional de Guerrero fills Chilpancingo's former Government Palace, an eclectic, Neoclassical building put up in 1902 under Porfirio Díaz on the Plaza Cívica Primer Congreso de Anáhuac, the city's main square. It housed the state government until 1972 and the town hall until 1985, was declared a historic monument in 1986 and opened as an INAH museum on 13 March 1987. It is the only building in the city officially registered as historic. The plot once belonged to the rectory of the Asunción parish, where Morelos is said to have shut himself away to write the Sentimientos de la Nación in 1813.

After roughly five years of restoration it reopened on 20 December 2016 with a new layout that takes the state's story from pre-Hispanic times to the Restored Republic, plus a new room on the Revolution in Guerrero with photographs of its regional leaders. Galleries cover archaeology, Spanish rule, ethnohistory, Independence and the Porfiriato, and an ethnography section looks at the jaguar's place in Guerrero's identity. The collection runs to more than 4,200 pieces: pottery, obsidian, copper, shell and the tiny stone figures of the Mezcala culture; sacred art from the 16th to 18th centuries, altarpieces and liturgical books; goods from the Manila galleon trade; facsimiles of the Sentimientos de la Nación and of the flags of Hidalgo, Morelos and the Army of the Three Guarantees; and a table and sword said to have belonged to Vicente Guerrero.

The four corridors around the central courtyard and its stone fountain are lined with murals that Roberto Cueva del Río and Luis Arenal painted in vinyl paint between 1952 and 1956, showing the birth of Cuauhtémoc, Moctezuma meeting Cortés, the capture of the last Aztec ruler, the insurgents Guerrero, Galeana, Trujano and Morelos, the Ayutla Revolution and the 1910 Revolution. Temporary shows rotate through as well; from July to September 2025 it hosted Cuauhtémoc. Historia y memoria, on loan from the Templo Mayor museum.

How to get to Museo Regional de Guerrero

The museum sits in the heart of Chilpancingo at Plaza Cívica Primer Congreso de Anáhuac s/n, Colonia Centro, beside the Asunción cathedral. By car it is 106 km from Acapulco on the Autopista del Sol (95D) or free Highway 95, about 1 h 15 min; from Mexico City take the same motorway south. By bus, Estrella de Oro leaves Mexico City's Terminal del Sur (Taxqueña) every hour and takes about three and a half hours, and Futura and ETN also run the route. From Acapulco's Costera terminal, Estrella de Oro leaves every 20 minutes and arrives in just over an hour and a half; CostaLine, ETN and Futura run fewer departures. Buses pull into the Central de Autobuses at Avenida Benito Juárez 16; take a taxi from there to the main square, as taxis or a car are the easiest way around town. Guerrero sits at the top level of the US State Department's warnings, Do Not Travel, so plan the visit for daytime.
